A ground-breaking study published in Computers and Education Open (Baran et al., 2026) confirms that effective AI adoption requires us to reframe AI literacy. Rather than a static list of tools to memorise, AI literacy must be treated as an active, reflective design practice. In New Zealand, this research validates our focus on human-centred AI for teaching and learning, ensuring technology acts as an assistant, not a replacement.

The research study, titled “Human-Centered AI for Teacher Educators: Designing Professional Learning for Critical AI Literacy” (Baran et al., 2026), highlights that educators rarely receive systematic preparation to lead AI integration. By translating these needs into a five-module curriculum (covering foundational knowledge, ethics, pedagogy, policy, and human-centred frameworks), the study identifies educators as the critical “nexus” where critical AI literacy and HCAI merge. In our view, this is the exact blueprint we are applying across secondary and primary kura to build institutional capability.
Decoupling Writing from Thinking: The Ultimate Equity Move
Educators are currently battling historic workload burnout, often spending hours on differentiated planning that could be streamlined. At the same time, traditional assessment environments frequently isolate cognitive ability by binding it to physical motor skills. Students who struggle with manual typing, writing, or traditional exam constraints are often mischaracterised as lacking comprehension.
To close the equity gap, we must decouple raw student motor skills from cognitive assessment. By leveraging physical hardware models—such as smart handheld voice-recorders and wireless earbuds—students with diverse learning needs, bilingual speakers, and Māori and Pacific learners can verbally articulate high-level analysis and critical thinking without physical writing bottlenecks.
